What Are MMA Rules In WWE?

WWE has always had distinct rules that make it different from other combat sports. Similarly, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) also has its own set of rules and regulations that govern the sport. However, in recent years, there has been a crossover between WWE and MMA, with some wrestlers transitioning to MMA and vice versa.

With Rhonda Rousey being one of the most successful people to make the transition from MMA to WWE, the organization decided to special new rules in place to pay homage to her mixed martial arts roots while still staying true to its entertainment style. Thus, the birth of MMA rules in WWE.

MMA Rules In WWE Explained…

When Ronda Rousey vs Shayna Baszler was announced for SummerSlam back in 2023, it was clear that WWE wanted to showcase the skills of both fighters in a unique way. The match was set to have MMA rules, which meant that it would have a different feel from the traditional WWE matches.

The competitor who either surrenders (taps out), or is rendered unconscious whether via a strike or a strangle grip loses the match. This rule is typical in MMA but not in regular WWE matches. It was an interesting move by WWE to incorporate these rules, especially because they are known for their scripted outcomes.

Will There Be More MMA Rules Matches In WWE?

While the Rousey vs Baszler match was a one-time special, there have been rumors of more MMA rules matches being introduced in WWE. There are talks of potentially having a whole event dedicated to these types of matches, with wrestlers who have an MMA background being the main focus. This type of crossover is speculated and mostly just fantasy but imagine if it were to become a reality?

It would be an exciting and unique event for fans of both MMA and WWE. The two worlds coming together in this way would bring a new element to the entertainment industry. With both brand under the TKO umbrella, this could be a lucrative opportunity for both organizations.

Will This Affect The Traditional WWE Style?

Even with the potential of more MMA rules matches being introduced in WWE, it is unlikely that it will completely replace the traditional style. WWE is known for its larger-than-life characters and scripted storylines, which would not necessarily fit into the format of an MMA match. However, it could add a new layer of excitement and unpredictability to the traditional matches.

As someone that started as a WWE fan and then began watching mixed martial arts, I can say that both styles have their own appeal. While MMA may focus more on the technical aspects of fighting, WWE has a strong emphasis on entertainment and storytelling.

Introducing more MMA rules matches in WWE could bring in new fans and further diversify their audience. For someone like me that appreciates both styles, it would be a dream come true to see the two worlds collide. From ‘sweet chin musics’ to switch head kicks, it would be a night to remember.
